本片主要讲述1937年日本侵略南京我开展的一系列的烧杀抢掠的恶行，为了生存，很多的国人无奈之下进入到了美国教堂之中。日本人恰巧不敢在教堂之中开展报行。这时有一位美国人为了拯救国人，不惜冒着生命危险假扮神父，还有一群躲在教堂之中的女学生为了安抚民众恐惧的灵魂，做着微小的事情。不仅如此，他们还拯救了一群殊死抵抗的军人还有伤兵。在生命和逃亡的考验之下，所有的人都演绎了一场感人而又悲壮的故事。
