成为幽灵的萨姆很快获知真相，好朋友卡尔就是害他死亡的幕后真凶，他的目的是为了窃取银行的巨款，因为要获得萨姆的秘码，卡尔开始追求美莉。萨姆游荡于美莉的周围来保护她，可是无法跟她沟通交流让萨姆非常苦恼，于是他通过灵媒奥塔（乌比·戈德堡饰）来跟美莉建立联系，美莉起初根本不相信这样的事情，但一件件事实让她终于感知到了萨姆真的在自己身边。

萨姆为了不让卡尔计谋得逞而展开了一系列报复行动，让卡尔和他的几个手下得到了报应，卡尔落得了自取灭亡的下场，萨姆终于完成了心愿，在去往天堂之前，美莉和现出真身的萨姆紧紧相拥，人鬼之情在那一时刻彻底升华。

Sam (Patrick Swayze) is a bank clerk who is very much in love with his fiancée Mellie and is going to have a wedding soon. His good friend Carl (played by Tony Godwin) also specially helped them buy a beautiful apartment, but unfortunately things happened. One night, Sam and Meili were raped by homeless men on their way home. During the robbery, Sam died in the fight, Meili was very sad, and Sam turned into a ghost and refused to leave for a long time

Sam, who became a ghost, soon learned the truth. His good friend Carl was the real murderer behind his death. Stealing a huge sum of money from the bank, Carl began to pursue Meili because he wanted to get Sam's secret code. Sam wandered around Meili to protect her, but Sam was very distressed by not being able to communicate with her, so he established contact with Meili through the psychic Otta (played by Whoopi Goldberg). She didn't believe such a thing at all, but one fact after another made her finally perceive that Sam was really by her side.

Sam launched a series of revenge actions in order to prevent Carl's scheme from succeeding, and Karl and several of his men got retribution , Karl ended up committing suicide, and Sam finally fulfilled his wish. Before going to heaven, Meili and Sam, who showed up in real body, hugged each other tightly, and the love between humans and ghosts was completely sublimated at that moment.
