The film "The Evidence of Life" is set in the final years of the French occupation of Vietnam. The lady Ariana runs a rubber plantation in southern Vietnam. She adopted the Vietnamese princess Camille, whose parents died, and the two depended on each other. Ariana develops a love affair with Jan Baptis, a young Vietnamese colonial naval officer, who later falls in love with Camille. Camille is determined to marry Jan and runs away from home to follow him

The story takes place in French-occupied Vietnam, a period of political unrest and social conflict. Ariana has a special status.
