"A Chinese Ghost Story (Cantonese)" is a Hong Kong romance film released in 1987. The film stars Leslie Cheung, Joey Wong, Wu Ma and Lau Siu-ming, and is directed by Cheng Xiaodong. The film is a remake of the film of the same name produced by Shaw Brothers in 1960.

The film tells a story between the scholar Ning Caichen and the female ghost Nie Xiaoqian Love between humans and ghosts. In the story, Ning Caichen encountered heavy rain on his way to collect debts in Guobei County, so he hid in Lanruo Temple for a temporary stay. In the temple, he was attracted by the sound of the piano, and met a girl named Nie Xiaoqian. Nie Xiaoqian exuded killing intent at first, but fortunately Taoist Yan Chixia arrived in time and rescued Ning Caichen. Nie Xiaoqian gradually developed love for Ning Caichen because of his integrity and kindness, but was stopped by Yan Chixia. But Ning Caichen mistook Yan Chixia for a murderer and planned to elope with Nie Xiaoqian.

The tree demon grandma forced Nie Xiaoqian to kill Ning Caichen, but Nie Xiaoqian refused to do so , So grandma ordered all the demons to kill Ning Caichen and Nie Xiaoqian together. Fortunately, Yan Chixia appeared and rescued the two, and then fought fiercely with the tree demon's grandmother and sealed her for a hundred years.

At this time, Ning Caichen learned that Nie Xiaoqian was originally a ghost. Because her bones were abandoned in the wilderness, she was controlled by the tree demon grandmother, who looked around every night for mature men to absorb yang essence to prolong her life. In order to prevent Nie Xiaoqian from being humiliated again, Ning Caichen promised to send her body back to the countryside for burial so that she could be reincarnated.
