In the United States in the early 1920s, the economy had just started, and all walks of life were in a state of chaos. Noodles, a street gangster, has a crush on Deborah, the girl next door. He often peeks at Deborah dancing in the warehouse, and Deborah knows all about it. Noodles and several peers carried out some illegal smuggling activities. During one operation, three companions were shot dead by the police, and the look in the eyes of one of them was forever engraved in Noodles' mind. After several years of prison life, Noodles organized friends from the past to return to their old business. The business scope became larger and larger, involving robbery, theft, etc., until the US government issued a prohibition on alcohol, and Noodles’ business of making money every day finally stopped. One of the members, Max, planned to rob the bank. Noodles couldn't bear to see his friends go into prison, so he secretly called the police. The police and Noodles' criminal organization shot and killed everyone

When his gray hair was dying, Noodles returned to his hometown and found that Max was not dead at all. Embezzled money from the organization and became a political celebrity. The goddess Deborah, whom Noodles had a crush on, also became Max's mistress. Max, who was riddled with crimes, asked Noodles to kill himself and apologize to his companions. Noodles refused, and Max finally committed suicide. The absurdity and enthusiasm of a generation came to an end.
