《菊次郎的夏天》是一部由北野武执导的电影，讲述了一个关于成长和家庭的故事。在这个故事中，我们见证了一个小男孩，正男，如何在一次与自由职业者菊次郎的冒险旅程中成长，并重新发现他的家庭。
正男是一个小学三年级的孩子。暑假到了，但是他的朋友们都去了海滩或是乡下玩，他却孤单地在家。他的爸爸在他很小的时候就去世了，妈妈则在很远的地方工作。正男和他的奶奶相依为命，但这个寂寞的暑假对他来说实在是太无聊了。
在这个时候，他听说了一个从未见过的地方，丰桥，那里是他的妈妈住的地方。于是，他带着自己的日记、暑期作业和零花钱，踏上了寻找妈妈的冒险之旅。
这时，菊次郎出现了。他是一个自由职业者，一直过着不羁的生活，从未有过一份稳定的工作。他被卷入了正男的冒险旅程，尽管正男不喜欢他，但他仍然陪着正男前往丰桥。
然而，菊次郎并没有用他的旅费来寻找正男的妈妈，而是拿去赌博，最后输光了所有的钱。正男很伤心，但是菊次郎也意识到了自己的错误，并回来陪伴着正男继续他们的旅程。
最终，他们到达了正男妈妈的住所。正男兴奋地认出了照片中的妈妈，但是他看到妈妈身边有一个男人和一个小女孩，意识到自己已经被妈妈抛弃了。他很难过，但是菊次郎告诉他那个女人并不是他的妈妈，而是已经离开了。菊次郎给了他一个带铃铛的玻璃天使，告诉他在困难的时候可以摇一摇，天使就会出现。
